Fans have been asking for weeks what the main event of UFC Fight Night 154 would be, and for the longest period, no one understood. The event takes place June 22 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and with neighborhood boy Stephen”Wonderboy” Thompson unavailable to fight soon after the beating he took against Anthony Pettis in March, it was difficult to predict who would headline the card.
We understand.
The UFC announced this week that the main event of UFC Fight Night 154 is going to be an exciting five-round featherweight struggle between”The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung and Renato Moicano. These are two of the best featherweights in the world, which fight should be a lot of fun. It May not be a title fight, but you would be hard-pressed to see any fans whine about this struggle Jung (14-5) is coming off of a last-second KO loss to Yair Rodriguez in UFC Fight Night 139 in one of the most significant MMA battles of all time. Jung was well on his way to winning the bout before he got caught with an unorthodox upwards elbow by Rodriguez at the 4:59 mark of the fifth round and endured a shocking weight loss loss. His general UFC record dropped to 4-2, but the truth he’s won six bucks in six UFC fights says everything about Jung. Lose or win, Jung is one. It will be tricky to recover from such a brutal KO following such a war of a fight, however after taking over six weeks off to heal up, hopefully he’s 100 percent healthy and good to go for this battle. The loss to Rodriguez knocked him out of the featherweight title picture for now, but when he can conquer Moicano, he will jump right back into the mix.
Moicano (13-2-1) is also coming from a brutal KO reduction, this one to Jose Aldo back in UFC Fight Night 144. Like Jung, Moicano was winning the fight till Aldo turned the clock back and unleashed a violent flurry of strikes that knocked Moicano out. He’s 5-2 in the UFC and one of the best featherweights in the world. Besides losses to Aldo and Brian Ortega — there is no shame to shedding to either of these men — Moicano has been one of the best featherweights in the UFC otherwise. Like Jung, he needs to rally from his last loss in order to rejoin the featherweight title mix, but there is no reason to thing that he can not do it.
The chances for this battle ought to be interesting if they come out, but if I had to guess, Moicano will be slightly favored. Bettors will probably be seeking to fade Jung coming from that bad loss while Moicano is somebody who always gets a ton of respect from the betting public. Nonetheless, it’s definitely a close fight that could go either way, and MMA fans in Carolina should be excited that they landed such an exciting fight as the main event of UFC Fight Night 154.
